As HVAC contractors, you’re on the front lines of how regulations affect real people. When new rules roll out—whether it’s refrigerant transitions, efficiency mandates, or permitting changes—it’s not just your workflow that changes. It’s your customers who feel the impact most.
Policymakers don’t live in our world. They don’t see the frustration of a homeowner trying to understand why their repair bill just doubled, or why their old system can’t be serviced anymore due to refrigerant phaseouts. They don’t witness the sticker shock when customers are told their only option is a new system that meets updated energy codes but costs thousands more. These aren’t just anecdotes—they’re powerful evidence of how regulations affect real people.
And that’s the disconnect we must fix.
When legislators only hear from manufacturers, lobbyists, and regulators, they get a filtered version of the industry. But when they hear from you—the people who walk into homes and businesses every day, who explain the new rules face-to-face with confused or upset customers—they begin to understand the true impact of their decisions on those who hire them – the voters.
You don’t need to be a policy expert. Just be a storyteller. Call or email your representative. Join your local or state trade association. Attend town halls. Write a letter. Share the practical challenges your customers face and make it clear: contractors are not against progress, but want smart, workable policies that balance environmental goals with affordability and feasibility.
Your voice as a contractor is powerful. But when you also share the voices of your customers—their worries, their costs, their confusion—you help build a picture lawmakers can’t ignore. Because if you don’t speak up, someone else will—and they may not speak for us, or for the customers we care about.
