-Vertical bypass design frees up valuable, eye-level space in crowded mechanical rooms. -Type 12 vertical bypass offering ensures uninterrupted system performance, even in dirty conditions typical of indoor mechanical rooms.
-Type 4X vertical design extends reliable operations and space savings to the most demanding, outdoor installations.
ABB’s ACH580 UL (NEMA) Type 12 and Type 4X Vertical Bypass Drives are engineered for HVACR applications that demand reliability, protection, and space efficiency. Designed for use in mechanical rooms, utility spaces, and other demanding environments, this product combines ABB’s proven ACH580 variable frequency drive with trusted E-Clipse Bypass technology in a standardized vertical enclosure. The result is a compact and resilient package that ensures continuous operation of critical HVACR systems while protecting against dirt, debris, and dripping water.
ACH580 drives deliver precise motor control, energy efficiency, and intuitive operation for a wide range of HVACR equipment, including fans, pumps, and compressors. The integrated E-Clipse Bypass ensures uninterrupted system performance by automatically transferring operation during maintenance activities or in the event of a drive fault. This combined technology increases uptime and provides peace of mind for facility managers and building operators who rely on consistent airflow and system resilience.
The innovative vertical design eliminates the need for bulky custom-built cabinets, as the drive and bypass are stacked in a narrow, wall-mounted configuration. This saves valuable wall space in crowded mechanical rooms, simplifies installation, and enables a uniform approach across multiple sites and projects. Previously available in Type 1 configurations only, the Type 12 model adds environmental protection for indoor installations exposed to dust and moisture. ABB is also releasing a Type 4X model, extending these benefits outdoors by protecting against rain, ice, and corrosion, perfect for coastal applications subject to salty sea spray and extreme conditions.
“Type 12 and Type 4X vertical offerings ensure that users don’t have to compromise between valuable space savings and higher degrees of protection that reduce maintenance needs and extend product longevity,” says Paul Olis, Product Market Manager, HVACR at ABB.
By expanding the Vertical Bypass Family to include both Type 12 and 4X enclosures, ABB is delivering a standardized, space-saving solution that adapts to any environment. Together, the ACH580 UL Type 1, 12, and 4X Vertical Bypass offerings represent the next evolution in sustainable HVACR control. The Vertical Bypass Family of drives will be displayed at AHR in booth C1707, February 2-4, 2026. For more information, go here.
