Would you Rather be Intellectually Smart or Business Smart? By Ruth King

It doesn’t matter how intellectually smart you are. It matters if you implement what you learn…through a book, at a meeting, in a conversation, or somewhere else that you get a great idea.

If you don’t implement you’ve wasted your time. You don’t have to have an off the charts IQ to implement. You need business smarts to implement.

Let’s say you get a great idea.

Is your immediate reaction, that will never work? Did you think, “I’ll never sell it to my employees?”

Did you even investigate the idea to see if it might work?

How many times have you attended conferences, heard really smart speakers, and come back with great ideas? You try to implement one or two and your employees roll their eyes and think, in a month or two everything will be back to normal? The ideas, which could help your employees and your company, get ignored and go away.

Then I thought more about the differences.

The business smart owners and managers hire employees who are smarter than they are. They hire people who can implement. They give clear direction of what is expected and require them to report back regularly.

These are business smarts.

This is not rocket science.

This is set expectations, make sure the person is qualified to do the job, track their progress and results, and communicate.

Even what I learned in MBA school is nothing like the real world of contracting financials. Yes, the format for P&L’s and Balance Sheets is the same. However, we look at so many different things than I learned in school.

Your Profit and Loss statement and Balance Sheet don’t give you your intelligence score. They tell you whether you are profitable and building wealth… two keys to achieving your goals. They tell you your business score.

Would you rather be intellectually smart or business smart?
